A spokesperson for Instagram told Mashable that the bug has been fixed.
Instagram’s new feature allowing multiple accounts comes with a caveat for Android users: there’s a bug that shares your personal notifications and direct messages with other users.
If you share access to an account with other Instagram users on Android, you may have noticed that DMs and notifications on your personal, non-shared account are being sent to them as well.
Here's a breakdown: Let's say you and I each have personal Instagram accounts and both have access to a third, shared account. If someone sends me a direct message to my personal account, you might also receive a push notification for that private, direct message even though it isn't sent to you or our shared account.
According to Android Central, tapping the push notification does not give you access to the other person’s account and you can't reply to the messages, thankfully. Tapping the push notification not meant for you will just take you to your own account on Instagram.
Regardless, you can still see quite a bit of private information if you are subject to this bug, including pieces of comments and direct messages, even being able to see who the direct messages are from.
This bug follows the update to Instagram that allows users to stay logged into multiple accounts and easily switch between them. It comes as a surprise that this bug wasn’t caught in the time since the feature started being tested on Android back in November, but it doesn’t appear to be happening to every Android user.
Android Central reached out to Instagram, which said “it is aware of this issue and is working on a fix.”
Instagram did not immediately respond to Mashable’s request for comment or update.
