South Korean operator SK Telecom announced on Feb. 14 that it will showcase its 5G network technology that offers data speeds of 20 giga bits per second (Gbps) for the first time in the world at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016, the largest mobile trade show to be held for four days from Feb. 22 in Barcelona, Spain.
The company will open its large exhibition hall at the third exhibition hall, or the main hall, in which global leading ICT firms are located, demonstrating the data speeds of 20 Gbps and introducing real-life examples of the 5G network. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) specified that the future 5G networks will have speeds of at least 20 Gbps. SK Telecom unveiled 7.55 Gbps data transmission speed through the 5G core technology and 5G robot, which is able to work at disaster sites, at the MWC last year.
The company also plans to showcase the images of future life with the next-generation platform services at the exhibition. It also decided the theme as “Dive into the Platform.” Based on its strong communications infrastructure, SK Telecom will reveal the next-generation platforms that improve the value of life, society and industry, and showcase future business and platform services at the upcoming MWC.
Major items displayed at the MWC include the platforms for lifestyle products, such as the next-generation tiny “smart beam” projector and services for kids and pets, the next-generation media platforms, including 8K UHD TV content transmission technology and UHD live broadcast solutions, the advanced Internet of Things platform, smart home, and the 5G network.
