Teenager blames £1,300 phone bill on this little-known iPhone feature - but are you at risk too?

Many of us have been stung by a phone network charge after using too much data, but one tech-hungry teen is blaming the iPhone itself .

Ashton Finegold from San Francisco claims he racked up a $2,000 (£1,300) phone bill thanks to Apple's new Wi-Fi Assist feature.

Launched for the first time in the company's newest iOS software , Wi-Fi Assist means the phone will start using cellular data when the Wi-Fi signal is too weak.

The switch happens in the background so as not to disturb whatever you're using the phone for and the feature is turned on by default.

"I thought my dad was going to kill me," Finegold told CBS News .

Ashton's father, Jeff, added: "It's usually $250 a month - and this was over $2,000."

The shock bill came after the Wi-Fi Assist feature kicked in when Ashton was in his bedroom - which only received a patchy wi-fi signal.

It isn't the first time the feature has been in the headlines. Last year, a couple from California launched a class-action lawsuit against Apple claiming Wi-Fi Assist caused them to run up huge bills.

Apple has so far declined to comment on Ashton's story.

To check if you've got the Wi-Fi Assist feature enabled, go to the Mobile Data menu within the Settings app on your iPhone.

If you scroll to the bottom, you'll see the option to either enable or disable the function.
